Today marks the launch of the Lost Ark technical beta, where you can sign up to potentially get a code, or buy one of the early special additions for instant access.
This game was not really on my radar at all, until people started describing it to me as “Korean Diablo,” an ARPG with MMORPG elements that has become huge in places like Korea and Russia, and now is expanding westward in early 2022 through Amazon Games as its publisher.
Lost Ark will arrive at a particularly opportune time, given the massive delays we’ve seen hit Diablo 4, a game without anything even close to a release window. Though we’ve seen some extensive vertical slices from Diablo 4, the game was said to be years away from release, and after losing its director to Activision Blizzard misconduct allegations (he didn’t report behavior he should have), Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 are now both delayed into the indefinite future. I’d be amazed if we saw D4 any earlier than 2024 at this point.
So, enter Lost Ark, which is designed with echoes of Diablo clearly in mind, though it has MMO-ish elements like PvP. Some have criticized the game as being overly monetized compared to Diablo (post-Auction House, at least), which is a more common practice in Asia where it’s less controversial to have paid paths to higher levels or power.
Assuming everything goes as planned, Lost Ark might follow in the footsteps of games like Genshin Impact, a Chinese gacha title that has become a huge hit both in China and beyond. Lost Ark, on the other hand, has been available in other countries for quite some time and appears to have already established itself as a strong and addictive experience. Everyone I know in the “looter game space” is eagerly awaiting the release of the technical beta and the full release in 2022.
Lost Ark was originally supposed to debut some time in fall 2021, but due to QA issues and with regard to “worker health,” it was pushed to a new date, which I believe is March 31, 2022. This will land it on top of another new looter, the Borderlands spin-off Wonderlands, releasing on March 25, 2022. And both of these are hitting alongside the uh, birth of my first child, pretty much in that exact window. So my time with Lost Ark’s beta might be the most I can dig into it for a while, as I won’t be around much for the actual release if that date sticks.
